Heinz Rister, 85, of Beaufort, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at Carteret Health Care.

A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, March 10th at St. Egbert’s Catholic Church.


Heinz was born on February 10, 1938, in Husum, Germany, to the late Hans and Sophie Rister. His family migrated to the United States of America in 1946 when he was 8 years old. He grew up in Dayton, Ohio at Patterson Airforce Base and their family later moved to Manchester, Tennessee. Heinz honorably served in the United States Army.

On February 20, 1968, he married the love of his life, Patricia, in Pompano Beach, Florida. Heinz went on to work for IBM as an Aerospace Engineer, retiring in 1995. In 1998, they made to the move to Carteret County where he was a member of St. Egbert's Catholic Church and worked for the Coast Guard Auxiliary at Fort Macon. Heinz enjoyed hunting, fishing and the beauty and wonder of astronomy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia "Pat" Rister of the home; daughters, Lisa Handy and husband Don of Easton, MD, Laura Rister of Los Angeles, CA, and Lynn Kelly and husband Sean of Virginia Beach, VA; son, Brian Rister and wife Jody of Raleigh, NC; his twin sister, Irmgard Hamner and husband Roger of Lacey's Spring, AL; grandchildren, Chase Handy, Ashley Handy, Hannah Rister, Sadie Mae Rister, and Esme Rister.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gunther Rister.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Dr., Greenville, NC 27834.
