H.B. Cummings

H. B. Cummings, 81, of Newport, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at Carolina East Health Systems in New Bern.
H.B. was born November 2, 1927, in Beulaville, NC to Marshal and Ida Mae Jackson Cummings. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Merchant Marines. He attended St. Mary's Free Will Baptist Church in New Bern. He retired from J.P. Stevens Trucking Co. after 25 years of service. He continued to drive for Shavender Trucking and independently for several years after retirement. H.B. was also known for his shrimp sales on Glenburnie Dr. in New Bern. NC. for the last few years. He is remembered by family and friends for his love of fishing and the outdoors.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
He is survived by one sister, Mable English of Warsaw, NC and two brothers, Nathan Cummings of Kinston, NC and Norwood Cummings of Kenansville, NC., his wife, Mary Cox Cummings, three daughters, Phyllis Nixon and husband, Ken of Newport, Lorraine Christopher of New Bern and Barbara Horlick of Newport; two sons, Robert Cummings of Elon, NC and John Cummings and wife Terri of Kernersville, NC. Also surviving are two step-children, Wilma Shackelford and husband Dr. Paul Shackelford of Greenville, NC, and Clint Cox of New Bern, NC; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Register Cummings, his parents, and his brother, Stanley Cummings.
The family will receive friends 6:30 - 8:30 pm Friday at Munden Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Carteret County, PO Box 1619, Morehead City, NC, 28557.
