Hattie Dee Strollo

March 21, 1935 — December 21, 2018

Morehead City

Hattie Dee Davis Strollo, 83, of Morehead City, was taken to Heaven in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the morning of December 21, 2018, at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, Atlantic, NC.

A celebration of her life and homegoing will take place at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, December 28, 2018, at Open Door Baptist Church, where she was a charter member, with Pastor Jerry Linebarger officiating.  Interment will follow at Bayview Cemetery.

Hattie Dee was a faithful follower of Christ and served in many ways at her church since its founding in 1981. She loved her Savior, Jesus Christ, and was unashamed to publicly praise His name. For many years she did so as a soprano in her church choir. She tirelessly witnessed to, and served, those in need. For several decades she ministered to the elderly of her church by serving on the Senior Adult ministries committee. Her family is grateful to those at Open Door Baptist Church who took up the mantle of responsibility of serving the seniors of the congregation, especially Pastor Jerry Linebarger and his wife Judy – who faithfully continued to visit “Miss Hattie”, even though she was unable to effectively participate in conversations.

Hattie Dee was a faithful wife to Tony Strollo for 63 years, until his death September 11, 2018. She was also a devoted mother to only daughter Sally Strollo Lumpkin, and grandmother to only grandchild Tony Henderson. She had a loving and caring heart and would put her family and friends needs before her own.

She grew up in the Promise Land of Morehead City, and even though she and husband Tony lived “off” during his careers in both the US Marine Corps and US Coast Guard, the values and principals instilled in her by the good people of that special part of town remained with her. She and Tony were fortunate enough to retire and return to the Promise Land in 1976, where they lived for about twenty years.

Hattie is survived by her daughter Sally and husband Lee Lumpkin of Morehead City; grandson Tony Henderson and wife Cathy of Newport; and three great-grandchildren: Jimmy, Abby and Saylor. Hattie had no biological siblings, but she loved her cousins dearly. She joins her “brother Bobby” in heaven as she bids an earthly farewell to “sister” Jean Lawrence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mart and Sally Lawrence Davis.

Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Friday, December 28, 2018, at Open Door Baptist Church.

The family would like to thank the nurses, aides and staff of Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay where Hattie resided upon her return to the county following the Hurricane Florence evacuation, and also the staff of Harborview Skilled Nursing facility for the gentle and attentive care they have given in the final years of “Miss Hattie’s” life.
