Harvey “Leon” Scott, 90, of Harkers Island, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh.
His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2019, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. Gary Fairchild. Interment will follow at Vergie Mae on Harkers Island.
Mr. Scott was born in Dillon, South Carolina and raised in Hemingway, South Carolina. He graduated with the class of 1946 and excelled in baseball and football. He was offered a football scholarship to Clemson University but elected to enlist in the United States Marine Corps instead. In 1950, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Mary Louise Farris. He honorably served in the Marines for over 5 years and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. A job in the textile industry brought him to North Carolina. Shortly after the move, he started a 28-year career with the Post Office which ended with his retirement in 1988.
Mr. Scott was a dedicated Mason with Lodge # 735 in Raleigh for almost 30 years. He was an active member of Huggins Memorial Baptist Church where he served as an ordained deacon. His kindness extended into the community where he was always helping and serving others. As an avid outdoors man, he especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his daughters, Debra Marek of Albemarle, Jean Gower of Angier and Barbara Baker and husband Bernice of Garner; sons, Thomas H. Scott and wife Cynthia of Garner, Harvey D. Scott, Jr. and wife Debra of Youngsville; brothers, John Scott of Mansfield, OH; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Louise Scott; parents, French Odell and Lula May Scott; sister, Louvenia Chapman; and brothers, Dennis Scott, Everette Scott, Ravenell Scott, Deuy Scott, Jr. and Ronnie Scott.
Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2019, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
