Harry J. Thompson, 84, of Emerald Isle, died Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Duke Medical Center.
A celebration of life service will be held on Wed., Jan. 16, 2013 at 11:30am at the Emerald Isle Baptist Church with the Rev. Freddie Braswell officiating. Visitation will follow the service at the church.
Harry is a graduate of Virginia Tech and served in the US Army as a Captain. He was also a Mason and member of the Ocean View, Virginia lodge. He worked for Verizon in the Washington, D.C. area. While in D.C., he was active in the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and was chairman of the shelter crew. Following his retirement, he moved to Emerald Isle, NC. During his retirement, he discovered his love of carving waterfowl and was a member of the Carvers' Guild. He owed his love of carving to his friend and instructor at Carteret Community College, Kelley Nelson. He was also a member of the Emerald Isle Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma R. Thompson; daughters Lisa Montgomery, Laura Berberian and husband Lawrence and Leah Cecere and husband Jake; grandchildren David, Megan, and Molly Berberian, Kathryn and Anna Cecere and Sara Meldon.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Irma Thompson.
