Harry David Smith, 60, of Newport, formerly of Kinston, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 27, 2010. He was born on October 13, 1949. He passed peacefully at home in the arms of his wife and children. Harry was a disabled vet who proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Cove City Masonic Lodge and the Lenoir County Shrine Club. Harry was proceeded in death by his parents, Gatha and Oretha Lane; a sister, Rose Marie Lane; and a brother, James Douglas Lane. Harry was a devoted husband and is survived by his wife of nearly 41 years, Barbara. He had two children, a son, Harry David Smith II and wife Shannon of Kinston; a daughter, Valerie Michelle Zapata and husband Chris of Stella. He is also survived by seven grandchildren who were "Papa's babies": Riley, Miranda, and Wesley Zapata of Stella; Landon and Hardi Smith of Kinston; Mallory Lane of Swansboro; and Kalei Stanley of Kinston. He is also survived by a special nephew, Kevin Lane of Dover and Newport. Harry has four surviving siblings: Phillip Smith and wife Peggy of Dover, Michael Lane and wife Sara of Dover, Gail Ormond of Kinston, and Wendy Harrison of Lumberton. He is also survived by his special aunt and uncle, Richard and Glennie Callan of Newark, OH. He also has many nieces and nephews who he loved as his own. Harry was most happy in his boat, in a tree stand, or when he was with his family.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 4:00 pm at Cape Carteret Baptist Church with Pastor Kevin Clubb presiding. Graveside service will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park on Hwy 24 in Newport.
The family will receive visitors at the home; and one hour prior to the service at the church.
