Harry Chase Rivers Sr., 87, of Newport, passed away at his home on Monday, May 1, 2023.
His graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 3rd, at Amariah Garner Memorial Cemetery in Newport, officiated by Pastor Joseph Park. (See the link below for the Service Bulletin.)
Harry was born on May 18, 1935, in Greenville, North Carolina, to the late Harley and Madeline Rivers. He had a very full life enjoying many activities in the community. Harry was instrumental in founding the Newport chapter of the Kiwanis Club. He was a member and past master of the Ocean Lodge 405, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Harry was a faithful member of St. James United Methodist Church, he was a true man of faith.
A man of many hobbies, you could find him on his farm gardening or raising his beloved miniature horses, which he enjoyed showing off to strangers and friends alike while wearing his straw hat. Harry’s favorite food would have to be oysters with a shot of hot sauce. He loved Bluegrass music which he fondly referred to as Pickin’ and Grinnin’. Harry will be deeply missed by his loved ones and forever cherished as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Those left to treasure his memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Gayle Rivers of the home; daughter, Cyndy Yates (Joey) of Newport; son, Harry Chase Rivers Jr. (Donna) of Belgrade, NC; grandchildren, Rebecca Akers (Will), Tyler Mann (Ali), Emily Long (Shaun); and great-grandchildren, Henry Mann, Hadleigh Akers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Earl Wayne Rivers; and sister, Ann R. Jones.
