Harry Lee Brooks

January 24, 1924 — October 11, 2012

Harry Lee Brooks, Sr. of Cape Carteret, NC died peacefully in the presence of his family on October 11, 2012 at CarolinaEast Medical Center, New Bern, NC.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October  14, 2012 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Munden Funeral Home.  A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, October 15, 2012 at Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Ben Burrows officiating.  Mr. Brooks was a charter member of the church.

Mr. Brooks was born Harry Lee Brooks, son  of the late Harry S. Brooks and Pearl Brooks of Waynesboro, VA..

A graduate of Waynesboro High School, Mr. Brooks attended college at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA prior to entering the United States Marine Corps.  He proudly and unselfishly served for 32 years and was active in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  He also served a tour of duty at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and many other stateside bases, retiring with the rank of Chief Marine Gunner, CWO 4.

Mr. Brooks loved God, family and country.  He considered it an honor and a privilege to defend his country during his distinguished career.  He was a devoted husband and father who was always proud of his family.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and admired their accomplishments.

After retirement, Mr. Brooks served as Mayor of Cape Carteret, NC in the mid 1970s.

Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Frances Mallison Brooks, daughter, Lynn Fowlkes, Deerfield Beach, FL, sons James S. Brooks, Crofton, MD, and Harry Lee Brooks, II of Huntersville, NC, six grandchildren, Wendy Gibson, Fayetteville, NC, Dallas Cooper, Deerfield Beach, FL, Kelly Brooks, Frederick, MD, Lindsey Brooks, San Francisco, CA, Connor and Victoria Brooks, Huntersville, NC and three great-grandchildren, Andrea Cooper, Fayetteville, NC and Sebastian and Logan Cooper, Deerfield Beach, FL, one sister, Ms. Jane Brooks, Hubert, NC and six nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church, 100 Yaupon Dr, Cape Carteret, NC 28584 or the National Masonic Foundation for Children, PO Box 41540 Arlington, VA 22204 or a Charity of one's choice.
