Gy. Sgt. Richard “Rick” Carroll Maples, USMC Retired, 76, of Havelock, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2024, at his home.
A memorial service to honor Rick’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. LaVera Parato. The family will receive friends following the service. For those unable to attend, the service can be viewed through their obituary page on Munden Funeral Home’s website. The service will remain on the Funeral Home website for 90 days.
Rick was born on May 25, 1948, in Daytona Beach, Florida, to the late Elbert and Rose Marie Maples. He demonstrated his commitment to his country by serving with honor and distinction in the United States Marine Corps for over 23 years. Throughout his career, he exemplified the Marine Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment, earning the respect of his comrades and the gratitude of his nation. Following his retirement from active duty, he continued his service at Cherry Point in a civil capacity.
Rick was known for his sharp mind, quick wit, and deep love of games that challenged both. He particularly enjoyed pinochle, along with crossword puzzles, word games, and computer games. Rick was a devoted husband to Karen for 21 wonderful years, and enjoyed times spent with his family. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Those left to treasure his memory are his loving wife, Karen; daughters, Christina Maples Atack (Chris) of Pittsboro, NC, and Amanda Marie Maples (Shaun Richards) of New Orleans, LA; sisters, Sharon Hamman (Steve) of Yalaha, FL, Carla Holmes of Valdosta, GA, and Cathy Behe (Ron) of Ormond Beach, FL; brothers, Robin Maples (Cyndy) of Winter Garden, FL, Kimble Bronson (Julie) of Louisville, KY, Randy Noble (Leslie) of Yalaha, FL, Jeff Bronson (Beth) of New Mexico, James Maples (Shirley) of Orlando, FL, and David Maples (Sandy) of Orlando, FL; uncle, Ed Dyer (Donna) of Johnson City, TN; grandchildren, Ryan and Eli Atack; and his favorite cats, Buddy and Baby.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia Maples.
