Gwendolyn Anne Sorey Schultz, 89, of Havelock, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 17, 2024.
A memorial service to honor Gwen’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 31st at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. James Daub. The family invites you to join them for a light reception following the service.
Born on October 15, 1934, in Omaha, Nebraska, Gwen was the daughter of the late Mildred Leona Lerschen Sorey and Albert James Sorey. Her maternal grandparents were Natalie “Netty” Stassen Lerschen and Frederick Lerschen.
Gwen married Marcus T. Fountain Jr. in 1962 and raised 4 children, Candice, Cynthia “Cyndie”, Marcus “Marc” and Eric “Ric”. Gwen loved the Marine Corps life and being married to a "Top Gun". She has always taken extreme pride in the Corps and being a devoted patriot to this country.
Another source of pride arose from her remarkable accomplishments as a businesswoman. Many of you will know her from her work with Century 21 and Coldwell Banker. Or, perhaps from her work with the Chamber of Commerce. Others, still, will recall Gwen's many community service projects. She always took particular delight in her 'turkey drives' for the holidays.
When asked recently about her oldest memories Gwen recalled living at a Catholic girl's school called Notre Dame, visiting an aunt who was a riveter during the war, and walking hand in hand down the street, with a friend at the age of 7, celebrating the war's end. She loved afternoons with friends at the movies (her best friend's father owned a theatre), getting in trouble for "...playing commandos with the boys in the mud", and riding on the handlebars of a friend's bike as he delivered newspapers. They crashed once, she laughed, noting that despite (or perhaps because of) being "...pretty banged up, I sold the most Girl Scout cookies of any of the other girls!". Gwen was ever about the business of turning lemons into lemonade.
It might surprise you that Gwen did acrobatic dance on roller skates as a teen, frequented Las Vegas to listen to the Rat Pack in her twenties, had an astonishingly high blonde 'beehive' hairdo for a while and could do the Twist in a way that might shame Elvis.
What will not surprise any of you who knew Gwen, was her vivaciousness, humor, Southern gentility, pride in her country, wisdom in business and determined commitment to her children. Her legacy is one of grit and grace and she will be sorely missed by so many of us.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her children, Candice Lynn Davies (Klaus Hermanns) of Cary, NC, Marcus Tolmey Fountain III, of Havelock, NC, and Eric Alan Fountain of Havelock.
In addition to her parents, Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus Tolmey Fountain Jr. along with her daughter, Cynthia Ann Fountain who passed away in 2022. After Marcus’ passing, Gwen married Robert Shultz who also preceded her in death.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Craven County Hospice, 2818 Neuse Blvd, New Bern, NC 28562.
Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences.
