Gwendolyn Horton Baker, 85, of Beaufort, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Harborview Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Her memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, officiated by Reverend Ken Turner. Inurnment will follow at Carteret Memorial Gardens as a private service. Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Gwendolyn is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert “Bobby” Baker, of the home; son, Robert Alan Baker and wife, Yvette of Harkers Island; daughter, Darla Baker Vick and husband, Temple of Beaufort; sister, Tallulah Sanders and husband, David of Moseley, Virginia; grandchildren, Christopher Baker and wife Jessica, Nicholas Baker and wife Bonnie, Ashley Ensminger and husband Landon, and Melissa Mason and husband Justin; great-grandchildren, Karlyn Elizabeth Ensminger, Luke Alan Baker, and Bryce Henry Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Van Beuben and Jessie Horton.
Gwendolyn was born December 25, 1932 in Chattahoochee, Florida and moved as a young girl to Newport News, Virginia. She graduated from Warwick High School in 1951 and continued her education at Taccoa Falls Bible College in Taccoa Falls, Georgia, concentrating in church music. She was a member of several touring singing ensembles during her high school and college years where she played the accordion and sang. She had many fond memories of this period of her life.
On May 21, 1955, she was married to her “Sailor Boy,” Bobby. They welcomed their first-born, Alan, on June 9, 1956 and then a daughter, Darla, on December 19, 1959. They lived in the community of Williston for 28 years, then moved to Harkers Island Road.
She was loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She shared her love of music with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing for her family and fashioned many dresses for special occasions that were treasured.
She was a member of Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church, however she served as the church pianist for many different churches throughout eastern Carteret County. She taught piano at various schools throughout the county and at her home, and was on staff at Beaufort Christian Academy where she taught music and piano for over thirty years. She loved music and children and devoted her life to using her gift to spread God’s love.
