Guy Taylor, Sr., 93, of Atlantic, died Sunday at home following a long illness.
Guy was born on February 4, 1917 in Sea Level, NC and attended school in Sea Level and Atlantic. At age 18, he joined the USCG. He participated in the search for Amelia Earhart and was at Normandy during the D-Day invasion. He married his wife Ethel in 1938. They were married for 71 years, until her death in October, 2009. After 20 years in the Coast Guard, Guy retired, and he and his wife, Ethel Salter Taylor, moved to Atlantic. Guy bought a shrimp boat and the family moved to Key West for several years. In 1960, they returned to Atlantic and in 1965 built their home on Core Sound, During the next years, he worked on the water. Guy loved working in the yard and kept his yard looking beautiful, while maintaining a big garden until age 91. He was a Mason and a member of Atlantic United Methodist Church.
Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday at Atlantic United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Thick officiating. Interment will follow at Atlantic Community Cemetery.
He is survived by two children, Guy Taylor, Jr and his wife Phyllis of Astoria, Oregon, and a daughter, Donna Taylor Smith and her husband David, of Atlantic. He has four grandchildren, Trevor Taylor and his wife Keiko, Michael Taylor and his wife Tereasa, and Melanie Smith Perez and her husband, Garth of Seoul, Korea. He has five great-grandchildren, Megumi, Joy, Gregory, Tawny and Jake. A brother, Graham Taylor, of Mt. Vernon, MD, and three sisters, Velma Seitter of Beaufort, Varina Laing of Winchester, VA and Catherine Nelson of Sea Level.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to Atlantic United Methodust Church in lieu of flowers.
