Guy H. Hopewell, Jr.

Guy H. Hopewell, Jr., 86, of Atlantic Beach, passed away Friday, April 27­, 2018 at Carteret Health Care.

His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at Salter Path United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. David Bratton. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Guy was born in Jasper, N.C. and grew up on the Stoney Branch Farm in Spring Garden. He graduated from Jasper High School and began farming where he resided on Spring Garden Landing Road. He was self employed for New Bern Oil and Fertilizer Company as well as Dixie Chemical Company. Guy was the owner of Creekraft Cultured Marble for 17 years. He retired in 2004 and resided in Atlantic Beach with wife, Joyce D. Hopewell. He enjoyed playing golf and was so proud of his gardening. He finally caught the “big one” off his pier, a 19-pound Flounder.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce D. Hopewell, of the home; children, Cheryl Staten of Greenville, Judy Gladden (Bill) of Raleigh, Steve Hopewell of New Bern, Guy Hopewell, III (Gail) of New Bern, Paula Nix of New Bern, Craig Guthrie (Sharon) of Salter Path; sisters, Maxine Dawson of New Bern, Elizabeth James of New Bern; brother, Robert Hopewell (Janeth) of New Bern; grandchildren, Christopher and wife Karyn, Paula and husband Matt, Chelsie, Sarah, Ashley, Brandon, Savannah, Makenzie; and great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Olivia, Bentley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy H. Hopewell, Sr. and Elizabeth “Bessie” Dawson Hopewell; daughter, Beth Gish; and sister, Rachel Kamil.

Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2018 at Salter Path United Methodist Church.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the 3rd floor nursing staff and doctors at Carteret Health Care for their care of Guy during his most recent illness.
