He was preceded in death by his mother, Ingrid Hilting, his father, Carl Hilting, his nephew Mads Schou Nielsen and his dear uncle Joe Hudecek.
Gorm was a charismatic character who led an exciting life. He could fix anything, build anything, and could quickly learn to do any job. He was a unique free spirit, and there was no obstacle he could not find a way over, around, or through. He never hesitated, he just did. He was persevering, brave, smart, and naturally drew a crowd. He lived his life in chapters. He was born in Horsens, Denmark in 1951. At age 16 and 17, he sailed around the world twice as a crewmember on a Maersk freighter. He was a truck and bus driver and worked as a newspaper photographer in Denmark, taking pictures of the Rolling Stones on their 1972 tour bus.
In 1984 he left Denmark and sailed to St. Thomas, USVI with his five year old son on S/V Rasputin II. There he met and married Anna Brown in 1986. Gorm was a boat mechanic for most of his career. He was a hero to a multitude of stranded charter boat guests for repairing their boats at sea. The family lived on board in St. Thomas for six years and in Beaufort for six years. In 1998, the family moved to their first house, in Marshallberg. For most of the last ten years Gorm worked for Carteret County Schools in the maintenance department and was a volunteer firefighter in Marshallberg. In the last few years, he became a hobbyist. He loved gardening, skeet shooting, and raising fowl. He was beautiful and was very much loved.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gorm?s name to National Alliance on Mental Illness, Coastal Division, PO Box 301 Morehead City, NC 28557.
On the evening of July 3, the family will receive friends at 399 Gillikin Road in Otway between 6 and 8 p.m.
