Gordon Jackson Slaughter

September 23, 1943 — November 16, 2012

Gordon Jackson Slaughter, 69, of Newport, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 16, 2012 while at Vidant Medical Center.

The funeral service will be held 11 am Monday at Newport Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Carroll and Rev. Paul L. Loftin officiating.  Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Gordon grew up in Newport and graduated from Newport High School.  After enlisting in the US Coast Guard, he served for a short time in Alaska, but remained just off the coast of NC for most of his tour of duty.  Gordon graduated from Florida Technical College in Tampa, where he studied Computer Systems Programming and Systems Analysis.  His career with the Departments of Navy and Army took him to Washington DC, Virginia, Georgia, Florida and finally back home to Newport.  After retirement, he became a licensed NC Real Estate Broker and worked with several local real estate firms until he and his wife formed Lynne Jackson Real Estate.  Gordon was a member of Newport Baptist Church where, in years past, he served on several church committees and as an usher.   He also served on the West Carteret Water Corporation Nominating Committee and as chair of the By-Laws Committee for the Carteret County Association of Realtors and Crystal Coast MLS.  Gordon enjoyed gardening, worked hard, cared deeply for family and friends, and loved helping others.

He is survived by his wife Vickie Brinkley Slaughter of the home; his daughter Angela Slaughter and husband James of Carrollton, VA; his son Mark Slaughter of Raleigh; brother Ronnie Slaughter and wife Betty of Newport; Vickie's daughter Amy Miller of Magnolia, TX and her sons Quincy and Asher.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents Otis and Christine Slaughter.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to Newport Baptist Church Building Fund 312 Chatham St. Newport, NC 28570.
