Gloria Matthews Smith

Gloria Matthews Smith, 73, of Morehead City, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 18­, 2018, in her home.

Throughout her life Gloria loved helping others and was active with the local Girl Scouts where she served as a Scout Leader during her 15 years of volunteering. Gloria was active in the community and retired as an office manager from Farm Bureau Insurance and later worked for the NC Maritime Museum and local History Museum in Beaufort. A passionate crafter, she loved sewing and baking as well as exploring new arts and creative ventures. She was well-loved by friends and neighbors.

She was intrigued by faraway places and kept a habit of lifelong learning through books. Gloria was also a devout Christian who read the scripture often and collected devotionals. Gloria was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters, Drew Smith and husband, Keary Cunningham, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Lisa Rider and husband, Wes, of Sneads Ferry; granddaughter, Brittany Smith; and great-granddaughter, Bella Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hoke and Hattie Belle Matthews and sister, Darlene Barefoot.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the GBS|CIDP Foundation International, supporting those with or recovering from Guilain-Barre Syndrome, or a local wildlife rescue center, as she loved nature, especially pelicans.
