Glenwood "Glenn" Worth Slaughter, 86, of Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at his home after a long illness.
A funeral service to honor Glenn’s life will be held at 3 p.m., Monday, March 24th at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Paul Loftin. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Glenn was born on October 1, 1938, in Liberty, NC, to the late Otha and Lula Slaughter. He grew up in a sharecropping family, the oldest of 6 siblings. He was a hard worker who had a zest for adventure. After graduating as salutatorian of his high school class, he took off on a cross-country trip to California with several friends, working as a logger and luggage handler to pay his way.
When not farming, he learned the trade of building from his father. He continued this trade with his sons, Terry and Gary (and at times Stephen, Chris, Chase, Collier and Tyler) by his side. Slaughter and Son’s Construction was a successful and thriving business for many years.
Glenn pursued his interests to be a pilot and a scuba diver. However, his love of fishing was to be his biggest passion. He became a professional King Mackerel fisherman with several sponsorships for his Carolina Girl fishing team. His team was inclusively family members (Gary, April, Stephen, and Chase). The team traveled and won tournaments from North Carolina to Florida to Texas. He was inducted into the Southern Kingfish Association's Hall of Fame for his immeasurable contributions to the sport.
Glenn loved his family. He also loved to grow and share his tomatoes. He was gregarious and fun loving. He loved to tell the stories of his larger-than-life adventures. Being at one of his fish fry's or clam bakes will be some of the best memories for his family and friends.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include his son, Gary Slaughter (Beth) of Atlantic Beach, NC; daughter, Cindy Smith (Allen) of Pine Knoll Shores, NC; step-son, Larry White of Greensboro, NC; siblings, Carolyn Lewis and Dean Slaughter, both of Mebane, NC; and beloved grandchildren, April Slaughter of Atlantic Beach, NC, Stephen Smith (Erin), Chris Smith (Holt) of Morehead City, NC, Whitney Finch (Collier), Chase Slaughter of Atlantic Beach, NC, and Billy White (Wendy) of Brown Summit, NC. He was blessed with eight great-grandchildren and a very special friend, Sandra Slaton.
In addition to his parents, Glenn was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Doris Slaughter; son, Terry Slaughter; and sisters, Patricia Cooper, Mary Lee Bailey, and Doris Yarborough.
Glenn, your work is done. You have cast your last fishing line, hammered your last nail. It is time for you to rest and reap your heavenly rewards. Your legacy lives on.
