Glenn Phillip Lewis
November 28, 1947-July 12, 2011

Glenn Phillip Lewis, 63, of Morehead City died peacefully at his home surrounded by love of his family on July 12, 2011 after a valiant but unsuccessful battle with cancer.  Glenn was born in London, England to Virgil Thomas Lewis, a United States Marine from Carteret County, and Joyce Wilson Lewis, a British citizen, after they met and married at the end of World War II.  They came to the States on the Queen Mary after the war first residing in Marshallberg NC for the first dozen years of Glenn’s life which was spent enjoying that unique part of God’s country.  The family moved to Morehead City in 1959 where Glenn graduated in 1966 from West Carteret High School where he was an All-Conference receiver in football and multi-sport athlete for the Patriots. He joined the United States Army after graduation serving tours in Europe, the United States, and South Korea.

Glenn married his wife Lana on November 30th, 1974 while stationed at Castle Air Force Base near Atwater CA to which they returned after his discharge from the Army in 1978. They owned and operated a restaurant, The Desert Inn, until 1981 at which time Glenn became a Special Investigator with the United States Department of Defense. Glenn came home to Carteret County with Lana and sons Shawn and Chris in 1989 and continued to work as a special investigator until his retirement in 2005.  Time with family and friends was spent enjoying all the Crystal Coast has to offer.  An avid golfer, he could often be found at Morehead City Country Club giving his good friends the opportunity to separate his money from his wallet usually with very little success on their part.  Glenn was an active participant in his son’s school activities especially as a volunteer with the West Carteret High School Marching Band.

Glenn is preceded in death by his father Virgil in 1997 and recently by his mother Joyce in April of this year.  He is survived by his wife Lana, son Shawn of Jacksonville FL, son Chris & fiancée Katie Hurr of Raleigh, brother Michael Lewis of Chapel Hill, sister Susan Whitehead & husband Keith of Tampa FL, and brother Steve Lewis & wife Hope of Morehead City well as his many nieces and nephews who always enjoyed the company of Uncle Glenn as well as many cousins both here in the States and in England.
