Gibson Price Smith, 39, Broad Creek, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017 surrounded by family and friends, at Carteret Health Care, Morehead City.

His Celebration of a New Life Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Broad Creek Church of God, 394 Broad Creek Loop Road, Newport with Pastors Robbie Strickland, and Vernon Adams, officiating along with family remarks by his sister, Lisa Smith-Perri.

Before becoming bedridden in April 2004, Gibson had many loves and hobbies. Growing up in Broad Creek, he was very involved in the Scouts.  He grew up loving to fish, which is something that he continued as an adult. Gibson enjoyed car detailing and successfully competing in low rider car shows. He loved welding and proving that his father’s saw blades were not safe.  Being creative, many of them were transformed into sunflowers and potted plant holders with the addition of some rebar. He had a tender heart, which was displayed many times as he gave to others in secret.  His heart was drawn to the elderly and especially the elderly that he considered to be “in need”.

Since his illness began almost 13 years ago, he remained a miracle to his family and doctors. He has been a blessing to those that have been around him and a witness of faith.  His children, Zachary and Alisa “Pink-Pink” were his pride.  Alisa spent many hours at his side both reading, entertaining, and caring for him.

Gibson was the pride of his mother’s eye, as well, until her recent passing. Through the years, he received excellent care in his parents’ home under her watchful eye along with nurses, Susie-Q and Aunt Cheryl Piner, who called him many things, including “JJ”, “Henry”, and “The Boy”.

He traveled a lot. Although it was in the rear of a transport, he enjoyed going to visit his medical team in Greenville or locally to see his favorite doctor, William Walker, who had been the first to see him at the onset of his illness.

Many years ago, Gibson made tin can luminaries in memory of family that had passed that year and because he said it would be much easier for the youth that usually filled bags with sand. The church continues to use these luminaries and some will be used to outline the property following his service Friday night.

Gibson is survived by his father, Lester Gibson “Gibby” Smith; Children, Zachary Ryan Smith and Alisa Rene Smith; Sisters, Donna Smith Yeager of Newport; Lisa D. Smith-Perri of Cape Carteret; Lela Smith Britt of Crab Point; and Sabrina M. Allen of Broad Creek; Brother-in-laws, Thomas Yeager, Prentice Perri, and William Britt; Niece, Tabitha A. Allen of Cleveland, TN; Nephew, Tyler B. Cannon, US Navy of Grotton, CT.

He was recently preceded in death by his mother Dixie Russell Smith; infant brother, Lester Gibson Smith, Jr.; Paternal Grandparents, Pender and Lela Smith; Maternal Grandparents, Daniel and Polly Russell.

The family will be available from 5 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. for visitation and invite everyone to a finger food reception in the fellowship hall following the service.
