Gerald Arthur Sommer, 83, of Morehead City, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Carteret General Hospital.
A memorial service will be held 4:00 Friday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend John Pollock officiating.
Gerald served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After serving in the Air Force, he attended NYU and graduated with a bachelor's and master's degree in education. He taught Industrial Arts for 27 years at Lindenhurst High School in Lindenhurst, NY. He was very atheletic and loved playing football, baseball, tennis and jogging in his younger years and later in life became an avid walker. Following his retirement he moved to Tryon, NC, then to Leesburg, FL, and returned to NC to live in the New Bern and Morehead City areas. He enjoyed traveling to Europe and parts of the United States, and also camping trips with his family. He was a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a devoted teacher and will never be forgotten
He is survived by his wife of 51 years Vilma Sommer of the home: a daughter Caroline Watson and husband Marvin of Stephens City, VA: two sons Robert Sommer of Newport, and Eric Sommer and wife Kerri of Morehead City: seven grandchildren Marvin Dale Watson, Brittany Oher, Lindsay Oher, Dakota Oher, Olivia Watson, Charli Sommer, and Grace Sommer: four nephews George Sommer, Jr., Jay Lichty, Guy Lichty, and Jeffrey Roye: and sister-in-law Bobbi Sommer.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Caroline Sommer, brother George William Sommer, and sister Beverley Nicoli.
A reception will follow the service at the Club House at the Courtyard address is 303 Barbour Rd. Morehead City.
