George Daniel Phillips, Sr., 83, of Morehead City, went to be with Jesus Wednesday, January 13, 2010.
He was born June 6, 1926 in Miami, Fl, son of the late Leah Freshwater Phillips and Willis Jackson Phillips.
George joined the US Navy at the age of 15 and served on the U.S.S. MEADE in the Pacific during WWII. After the war, he returned to Morehead City and graduated from Charles S. Wallace High School. He attended the University of NC at Chapel Hill. In his younger days, he worked at Dixie Dairy. He was the first mate on a party boat, worked at Cherry Point in an apprentice program and then decided to go into the grocery business. His first store was Phillips Grocery on the corner of 1100 Block and Bridges St. He then started Pak-A-Sak Food Stores, Inc. and operated stores in New Bern, Swansboro, Beaufort, Atlantic Beach and Morehead City. He was elected grocer of the Year for North Carolina. Mr. Phillips served on the Carteret County Board of Commissioners and at that time, was instrumental in the development of Carteret General Hospital, serving as Hospital Ex-officio. He was an asset to the community. Upon retirement, George was able to enjoy his true love of boating and traveling south on the Intra-Coastal Waterway. He was a dedicated member of All Saints Anglican Church in Newport, NC. He had a great faith in Jesus Christ and love of our Lord. George had a loving heart for his family and will be missed very much by all of us.
Services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at All Saints Anglican Church. The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 pm Friday at Munden Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Verda Gray Phillips and their daughter, Savannah Noel Phillips; two daughters, Brenda Hughs of Morehead City, Georgia Carol Kennedy of Clemmons; two sons, Willis Jackson Phillips and George Daniel Phillips, Jr., both of Morehead City; 7 grandchildren, Elaine and Erica Hughs, Joe Kennedy, Dr. Amanda Kennedy Littleton. Willis Jackson Phillips, Jr., Jenny Phillips Toney and Lauren Ann Phillips; sister, Marion Phillips Sanchez. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Phillips.
