George Walter Bonawitz, Jr., 84, of Williston, died Saturday, February 6, 2010, at Carteret General Hospital.
Mr. Bonawitz was a 2nd Class Gunners Mate in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1943-1946 during World War II. He was part of the Normandy invasion and the battle for Omaha Beach. He served as Vice President of Acoustics Inc. until his retirement.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Tuesday at Williston United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Stewart officiating.
He is survived by three daughters, Carleene Bonawitz Robinson and husband Kermit Reed Robinson, Jr. of Smyrna, Jeannie Powell and husband Randy of Charlotte, and Mary Matlock of the home; eight grandchildren, George Reed Robinson,William David Robinson, and Matina Lea Robinson all of Ocracoke, Pamela Robinson Scott and Jamie Douglas Scott of Otway, Melissa Powell of Beaufort, Woody Powell, Shelby Matlock, and Gordon Matlock all of Charlotte; three great grandchildren, Lucy O'Neal, Chelsey Scott and Parker Scott; and special friend, Eva Finch of Harkers Island.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Violet Pratt Bonawitz.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Tina Robinson Benefit Fund, 264 Old Nassau Rd, Smyrna, NC 28579.
