Geoffrey J. Neilson, 82, of Cedar Point, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 14, 2024.
Born on April 13, 1942, in Queens, New York, Geoff was one of six sons born to the late Henry and Margaret Neilson. He honorably served in the United States Navy, where he was stationed on the renowned wartime USS Blenny. His time in the Navy was a source of great joy, as he always held a deep appreciation for submarines.
Geoff’s academic journey took him to Hofstra University, where he earned both his Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Speech Pathology. For 28 years, he dedicated himself to a fulfilling career as a speech therapist, positively impacting the lives of thousands by helping them communicate more effectively and express their thoughts.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Geoff shared his love of sports through his roles as a varsity baseball coach and a Little League coach. His strategic mind and passion for the game inspired countless young athletes.
After his retirement, Geoff continued to embody the spirit of service through his volunteer work with various organizations. He found great fulfillment in training service dogs at Life Line K9s and contributed his time to the Beaufort Maritime Museum, where he helped build ships. Geoff also held a special affinity for animals, dedicating time to the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter in Newport.
Geoff will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service, mentorship, and love for others will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 60 years, Linda B. Neilson; sons, Glenn Neilson (Kristina) of Dublin, OH and Greg Neilson of Norcross, GA; brother, Doug Neilson (Betty) of Maryland, Rick Neilson (Denise) of Virginia, and Kurt Neilson (Dina) of Oregon; and granddaughter, Meredith.
In addition to his parents, Geoff was preceded in death by his brothers, Henry Neilson and Keith Neilson.
