Gelita Ann (Midgett) Dowdy, 85, of Newport, passed away Friday, July 6, 2018, at her home.
Her memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the Munden Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Pastor David Price.
Married Erven Barron Dowdy June 25, 1949 Mostly a career Domestic Engineer, she also worked at the cork factory in Norfolk, Virginia in the ‘60s. A supervisor in the Clothing departments of TG&Y (Havelock) and Walmart (Morehead City) in North Carolina between the ‘80s and ‘90s.
The eldest of four daughters of William J. and Mary Ann (Fortescue) Midgett, she grew up knowing the Lord, love, hard work and responsibility. She held fast to these for nearly 86 years and imparted them to her entire family. All who knew her came to respect her, most learned to love her, our family held her in awe.
Bright eyes that smiled most all the time but could cut diamonds if you were being naughty (regardless of age)! Lovely and loving hands that could hold, caress and heal you, but one finger pointed at you could crush stone if you were being naughty (regardless of age)! A personality and disposition that always tried to encourage and uplift, but always reminded you of your responsibilities and held you accountable for your actions. And a heart of pure gold that loved us unconditionally, even when we were naughty, and we were frequently naughty!
She was a natural teacher. Though not a scholar, her wisdom transcended us. We (and countless others) always looked to her for advice on all facets of life, love, and family. More often than not we also learned a Bible lesson to go with it. And as a teacher will, when needed, proffer this advice whenever we really needed it without us having to ask.
Every person, family, friend or foe (as if) that knew Gelita Ann (Midgett) Dowdy is a better person because of her.
Survived by four children, Ruth Ann Morton, Linda Fay Dowdy, Erven Barron Dowdy, Jr., Gelita Jo Whitman; three siblings, Netia Gray Warmunde, Theda Fay Savage, Sheila Ray Smith; nine grandchildren, Shelly went to save her a seat in heaven a few years ago; and 24 great grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 2 pm to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the Munden Funeral Home.
