Gary Kent Willis, Sr., 70, of Morehead City, died Thursday, April 22. 2010, at 1311 Shepard Street, of which he was born and raised.
Mr. Willis was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Morehead City. In his earlier years, he was employed with Trumbull Asphalt. He then gained employment with Fry Roofing, which became Owens Corning and remained employed with the company until his illness. In his spare time, he enjoyed being a commercial fisherman. He was a member of the Core Sound Carvers Guild, the NRA, carried a NC lifetime sportmans license and was an avid duck hunter.
Services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday at First Free Will Baptist Church in Morehead City with Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating, assisted by Rev. Mance Cason and Rev. Clyde Cheezem. Interment will follow in Bayview Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Wanda Purifoy Willis; daughter, Karen W. Hamilton of Morehead City, and grandchildren, Stephanie H. Horne and husband Andrew Horne, Michele A. Hamilton, and April F. Hamilton, daughter, Kathy W. Guthrie and husband James of Newport, and grandchildren, Garrison "Cooper" Guthrie and Zachary T. Guthrie; son, Gary K. "Kenny" Willis, Jr. and wife Cindy of Straits, and grandchildren, Alan K. Willis and wife Alexis Willis, great grandchild, Aden K. Willis, grandchildren, Brandon K. Willis and William R. Willis; sister, Sherry W. Cheezem and husband Rev. Clyde Cheezem of Morehead City and brother, James "Jimmy" D. Willis and wife Barbara of Beaufort; ; close friend and cousin, Norman Larkee of Columbus, GA and many other cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dola and Novella Willis and two brothers, Nathaniel "Nat" Willis and George K. "GK" Willis.
The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 pm Saturday at Munden Funeral Home.
