Gary Merrell, 64, of Emerald Isle, passed away Wednesday, May 6­, 2020, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at the Merrell Estate and Gardens at 1700 Salter Path Road, Salter Path, NC. The service will be officiated by Pastor Tim Marriner and Pastor Donnie Griggs. For those unable to attend, the family invites you to view the webcasting of the service through Munden Funeral Home’s website. Friends are also encouraged to leave words of comfort to the family through the website.

Gary was born on January 29, 1956, on St. Simons Island, Georgia  to the late Billie Maxine Romans Merrell and Chandler Valgene Merrell. Many in our community know Gary through his many years of owning and operating Atlantic Beach’s DJ Shooters Restaurant which he acquired in 1988. In his spare time, he could be found working in his yard as a master gardener. His faith was an important part of his life as well as his home church, Glad Tidings, where he enjoyed his church family and friends. Gary was a loving husband, faithful father of four and proud grandfather of eight.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Anne Merrell of the home; daughters, Kira Nicole Merrell of Morehead City and Erika Christine Merrell Schadt and husband Christopher James of Cape Charles, VA; sons, Clarke Chandler Merrell and wife Liza of Morehead City and Ryan McKeithan Merrell of Newport; sisters, Patti Anne Suppé and husband Charlie of Corona, CA and Angel Seibert and husband Bud of Virginia Beach, VA; brothers, Greg Merrell and wife Linda of Claremore, OK and Bobby Merrell and wife Jill of Owasso, OK; sister-in-law, Caroline Merrell of Waynesville, NC; and grandchildren, Lorelei Turbeville, Vaeda Turbeville, Sylvia Turbeville, Noah Merrell, Marna Merrell, Fisher Schadt, Mattix Schadt and Krystyn Braswell.

He was preceded in death by his aforementioned parents and brother, Donnie Merrell.
