Gail Goodwin Lung, 77, of Greensboro, NC, formerly of Carteret County, NC, passed away the evening of Monday, March 25, 2024, in Greensboro, NC.
Judith Gail Goodwin was born in Washington, NC, on May 24, 1946. Her father and mother soon thereafter moved Gail and her older brother, Bruce Davis Goodwin, back home to Morehead City. A Moreheader bred, she was from time to time reminded that she was not a Moreheader born. Her father Bruce Lewis Goodwin, mother Ethel Blake Goodwin, and brother Bruce Davis Goodwin predeceased her.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, James W. Lung; beloved son “Will” James W. Lung, Jr.; and nephews and nieces in Wyoming, and in Dunn and Charlotte, NC.
Gail graduated from Morehead City High School (1964) and East Carolina University (1968). She taught grades one through three in the public schools of Carteret, Durham, and Guilford Counties for 31 years. She loved all of her students absolutely and unconditionally. Teaching little children was a gift and calling from God, and she pursued her calling with all her heart. Her main methods were a smile that would make you feel ten feet tall and a raised left eyebrow that would bring even the most mischievous back in line.
She served the Lord through her church where she helped in the nursery, taught little ones, participated in many ministries, and visited the elderly.
Gail suffered kidney failure due to a rare autoimmune disorder in the fall of 2020. She often wondered what her ministry could be as she became less and less active. Gail’s ministry was her very being. She was love poured out to every person she encountered whether in line at Harris Teeter, at Asbury Covenant Sunday School, or the dialysis center. And, in the end, she had a warm smile for the doctors and nurses attending to her during her last illness. Right up to the end.
Her body will be interred at Bayview Cemetery in Morehead City, NC, on Saturday, March 30. Friends are welcome to join the family at 10 a.m.
A memorial service will be held at West Market United Methodist Church in Greensboro at a later date.
In lieu of flowers or other memorials, the family hopes that memorials will be forwarded to the Children's Home Society of North Carolina.
