Gail Rackley Barnes, 85, of Beaufort, NC, formerly of Wilson, NC, passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
A Celebration of Gail's Life will be held at a later date.
Gail was born on June 27, 1938, in Wilson, North Carolina, to the late Elton and Lucinda Rackley. After obtaining her Bachelor's Degree from East Carolina University, she dedicated her life to pursuing knowledge and nurturing young minds. She had a remarkable 30-year career as an elementary teacher within the Wilson County school system where her dedication to her students and passion for education made a lasting impact on countless lives.
Gail's love for her community extended far beyond the classroom. She was a lifelong member of the Wilson First United Methodist Church, where she found solace, strength, and spiritual fulfillment throughout her life. In 1996, Gail relocated to Beaufort, NC, where she continued to engage with her community in meaningful ways. Her membership in the Beaufort Historical Society highlighted her appreciation for the rich history and culture of the area.
Beyond her professional and civic life, Gail found joy in the simple pleasures that life had to offer and could strike up a conversation with anyone. As a world traveler, Gail explored diverse cultures and landscapes, encouraging everyone to travel while they could. She reveled in the camaraderie and excitement shared among the Red Hats of Beaufort, embracing the spirit of fellowship and fun. Gail's green thumb and love for nature were seen through her active involvement with the Beaufort Garden Club.
Gail's home was her sanctuary, where she surrounded herself with collected antiques and cultivated a yard that reflected her of love of nature’s beauty and bounty. Her canine companion, Gidget, was an adored addition to her life, spotted donning pearls with flair.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her son, Charles N. “Woody” Barnes, Jr. and husband Brian Malcolm of Atlanta, Georgia.
In addition to her parents, Gail was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Wilson.
