Fred Charles Flake, 89, of Newport, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville with his family by his side.
A service was held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Open Door Baptist Church with Pastor Jerry Linebarger officiating. Burial followed on Wednesday at Coastal National Cemetery in Jacksonville.
Fred was born June 21, 1921, in New Orleans, LA, where he lived until he married his sweetheart Erin at the age of 20. He entered the Army Air Corps and served four years in World War II. After the war, he resided in Pensacola, FL where he was employed by the Department of Defense with NADEP (formerly NARF) for 44 years. He resided in Newport since March, 1999.
Fred is survived by his son, John and wife Diane, of Morehead City, grandson Jeremy, 1st Lieutenant US Army currently serving in Afghanistan, granddaughter Catherine Willis and husband Jonathan of Greenville, and special friends George and Janelle Bryson and daughters Savannah, Olivia, and Laura of Newport who were like family to Fred.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents Rupert and Nellie Flake, his wife Erin Alexander Flake, son Fred Charles Flake, Jr., sister Betty Mae Flake Youngblood, and brothers Ben Flake and Allen Flake.
Fred was a gifted artist and enjoyed painting, drawing, and woodworking. He was honored to have his decoy drawing chosen as the winner of the 18th annual poster for the Decoy festival in Harker’s Island.
The family wants to give special thanks to the employees of Carteret General Hospital, Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, and Pitt County Memorial Hospital, as well as the many doctors, who cared for him much of his last three months of life.
