Frankie Rice

December 30, 1920 — July 24, 2009

Frankie Mantooth Rice, 88, of Morehead City, died Friday, July 24, 2009, at Carteret General Hospital.

Mrs. Rice was born Dec. 20, 1920, at Ft. Oglethorpe, GA. She attended school in Chattanooga, TN and Berea College, Berea, KY. She met her future husband, Theodore R. Rice in college. They were married December 27, 1941 and for four years, they lived in Huntsville, AL, where Ted was stationed at the Huntsville Chemical Warfare Arsenal and served as an officer in the US Army Chemical Corps. Frankie worked as a stenographer at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville. After the Army, they lived in Boston for four years while Ted attended graduate school. In 1949, Frankie and Ted moved to Morehead City, NC, where Ted worked at the US Biological Laboratory on Piver's Island and later was director of the NOAA Laboratory. Frankie taught the 10 years old girls Sunday School class for several years at the First Baptist Church in Morehead City and later was a teacher for nine years at Camp Glenn School. She stopped teaching so she could travel with Ted. She enjoyed traveling and made many trips to France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Reading was a favorite past time for Frankie and she became a charter member of the Carteret County Friends of the Library. She had many interests and took classes in painting, ceramics, needlework, genealogy, creative writing and computers.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm Friday, August 7, 2009 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Ted Rice and their three sons; Dr. Theodore Roger Rice and his children, Zachary and Leah of Baldwinsville, NY, Dr. Gregory K. Rice and wife Teresa S. Rice and their son, Jonathan Scott of Durham, NC, Dr. Philip Scott Rice and wife Nancy P. Rice and their children, Philip Scott and Hannah Marie, and step-children, Katie and Beth Stillman of Morehead City, NC and her sister and brother-in-law, Margie M. and Donald Linnartz of Gainesville, GA.

The family will receive friends 4:00 - 5:00 pm one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers,the family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Dr., Greenville, NC, 27834 or the American Heart Association, Carteret County Division, 3015 S. Memorial Dr., Greenville, NC, 27834.
