Francis Carl Hamann, 91, of Morehead City, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Crystal Coast Hospice House surrounded by his family.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, Atlantic Beach, NC, officiated by Pastor Scott Berry. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.
Francis Carl Hamann was born in Geneseo, Illinois. He met his wife, Mary Williams Hamann, when she was a nurse cadet in Wilmington, North Carolina, and he was stationed at Camp Lejeune. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage.
During World War II, Mr. Hamann served in the United States Marine Corps and saw service in the New Hebrides, Guadalcanal, Guam, and Hawaii. He worked for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company for 40 years, ending his career in the home office in Greensboro, NC, as the Director of Pension Administration. He and Mary retired to Morehead City in 1987 and built a house on the Williams’ family farm on the Newport River. During their retirement, they enjoyed fishing and gardening, playing bridge, volunteering in the community, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. They hosted numerous oyster roasts and other gatherings at their home. Francis was active in Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Atlantic Beach where he served as President of the congregation, President of the Men’s Club, and Financial Secretary of the congregation.
Mr. Hamann is survived by his three children, Oneida Frances Hamann Levine, PhD, of the home, Mary Sue Hamann, PhD, of Gaithersburg, MD, and Philip Carl Hamann and his wife, Jane Burke, JD of Morehead City; three grandchildren, Sharon Frances Grimes and husband Eric Grimes, MD, of Mansfield, OH, Jacob Carl and Danielle Levine of Boulder, CO, and Joseph William Levine and Dionna Steplight of Macedonia, OH; and six great-grandsons, Julian Grimes, Duncan Grimes, Trevor Grimes, Nigel Grimes, Emerson Levine, and Joseph Levine.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Williams Hamann; parents, Elsie and Frank Hamann; and half brothers Darrell Klemmer, Sheldon Klemmer, and Edward Hamann.
The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 pm Tuesday at Munden Funeral Home, Morehead City
