Erwin “Shorty” H. Merrill, 80, of Havelock, passed away on January 8, 2018 at Croatan Ridge Nursing Home, Newport, NC.
A Funeral Service, with military honors, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel, Havelock.
Erwin served in the United States Marine Corp where he retired and then went into Civil Service and retired from there. Shorty enjoyed raising his family around, and near, any body of water they could get to. He was an avid gun rights activist. He was a member of the VFW of Havelock and Newport and he was very active with the Disabled Veterans. During his working career he helped build the conveyor belt at the Port Terminal and also helped with the high-rise bridge.
Erwin is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Merrill Hardin and husband, Greg, of Denton, TX; sons, Henry James Merrill and wife, Elizabeth, Kimo Luewikie Merrill and fiancé, Lynda Luther all of Haleiwa, HI, Joseph Scott Merrill and wife, Allison, of Riverside, CA.; brother, Jerry Fuller of PA; grandchildren, Gregory Hardin, Kaimana Merrill, Sam Merrill, Eleney Merrill, Jordan Merrill, Kimberly Merrill Mana; great-grandchildren, Tykes Merrill and Knox Merrill; nephew, Pat Sandor.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria C. Merrill; parents, Henry and Phyllis Merrill; sister, Charlotte Sandor and her husband, Phil Sandor; grandson, Jeremy Merrill.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Munden Funeral Home, Havelock.
