Ernest Carl Pate, Jr. , 84, of Morehead City, formerly of Raleigh, passed away Monday morning, February 6, 2012 at Carteret General Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darrell Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.
Ernest Jr. was born February 7, 1927 in Jones County and lived in Kinston in his early years. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Italy just after World War II. Ernie completed radio engineer training and worked at commercial radio stations in Greensboro and Wilson before joining Voice of America. His assignments included work in Marathon, Florida during the Cuban Missle Crisis, then in the Philippines, Thailand, Liberia and Washington, DC. He was honored for his service by President Ronald Reagan. Upon retirement, he and his wife Gerry, returned to North Carolina to be with family.
He is survived by three sons, Kenneth Pate of Marion, Alan Pate and wife Wanda of Beaufort, Steve Pate and wife Lisa of Willow Springs; two brothers, Heber Pate of Kinston and Robert Pate of Longwood, FL. He has five grandchildren, Matthew, Zachary (deceased) Haley, Nicholas, and Christina; three great-grandchildren, Bridget, Zachary and Cali.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
