Elmo Gaskill, Jr., 75, of Atlantic, passed away Friday, April 11, 2014 at Carteret General Hospital.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Atlantic Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Terry McInnis and Rev. Michael Fields officiating. Interment will follow at Atlantic Community Cemetery.
Elmo was a member and deacon of Atlantic Missionary Baptist Church. He also was a member of Carteret Historical Society, Core Sound Water Fowl Museum, American Legion and Friends of Hunting Quarters Primitive Baptist Church. He graduated from Atlantic High School, attended Chowan College, and graduated from East Carolina College with his Undergraduate Degree and Masters Degree. He retired as Lieutenant Commander with the United States Coast Guard Reserve after 32 years of service. He also retired with 30 years after teaching in Carteret County, Craven County and being a Principal in Craven, Robeson and Carteret counties.
He is survived by his wife Wanda Morris Gaskill of Atlantic; one daughter Janie Gaskill Mason and husband Jonathan of Williston; one son James Ervin Gaskill, Sr. of Atlantic; and four grandchildren Katlyn Maria Small, James Ervin Gaskill, Jr., Morgan Elizabeth Gaskill, and John Cooper Mason.
He was preceded in death by his parents Elmo and Maude Gaskill, two sisters Varina Daniels, and Elaine Willis, two brothers Daniel Gaskill, and Anthony Gaskill.
Visitation will be held 5:00-8:00 pm Monday at Atlantic Missionary Baptist Church.
