Ellen Hancock Guthrie, 100, of Harkers Island, passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Carteret Health Care with her only son and niece at her side.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Smyrna Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Dell Murphy, Rev. Danny Nelson, Rev. Chris Thompson and Anthony Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery.
She married the love of her life, Clayton Guthrie, Jr., who preceded her in death over 13 years ago. These two hearts were united together “until death do us part” at the Methodist Parsonage in New Bern, NC. Their marriage was a match made in Heaven.
Little did she know that she would become the wife of one of the great ministers in the Pentecostal Holiness Church denomination. Their ministry would take them around the world preaching and singing about the love of Jesus. Oh, the countless numbers of Christians that were blessed by their ministry.
Her mother Miss Carrie Hancock was the founder of the Pentecostal Holiness Church on Harkers Island where they had the privilege to pastor for over 20 years. Ellen would take on the role of “mother of the church” after the death of her mother.
Ellen was a very talented worker in the church, playing the piano and organ, helping the choir and with special singing. She taught Sunday school, served as Women’s president and very effective involving the younger people in programs and plays.
In her husband’s memoirs he stated that she was “An ideal preacher’s wife and in all the conferences and meetings we have been engaged in, while others were changing, she had maintained her convictions of holiness living and has been an example and shining light for others”.
The bright spot in their home was the birth of their only son, Bradley, who was a faithful son to his mother until her passing.
She is survived by only son, Bradley; a special niece, Marilyn Rose and family in whom she depended on like a daughter, and a host of nieces and nephews that visited her frequently and were concerned about her care, and great niece, Mia Smith that provided her night time care; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Creekmore and husband Charles of Greensboro.
In addition to her husband Clayton, she was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Carrie Hancock; siblings, Mary Louise Gaskill and twin sister, Ellen Hancock, Sterling Hancock, Georgia Willis, Mollie Lewis, Louie Hancock, Louisa Gaskill, Lorena Scott, Agnes Hamilton, Helen Lewis, and Charles William Hancock.
The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 pm Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Smyrna Pentecostal Holiness Church.
