Elizabeth “Liz” Cook Shumate, 79, of Newport, NC, entered into eternal peace on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, surrounded by her family at Carteret Health Care.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel in Morehead City.
Elizabeth will be most remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who always showed us that where there is a will, there is a way, especially when life’s challenges are approached with “a chuckle and a grin.”
Liz loved her Savior Jesus and never missed an opportunity to tell others about her faith and her love of the Lord. She was an avid quilter, and nothing made Liz happier than making quilts for family and friends in celebration of graduations, weddings, baby showers and holidays. Wrapping up in one of Liz’s quilts is like getting a big hug from her. She will be so deeply missed.
Elizabeth is survived by five children and their families - daughters, Elizabeth “Beth” Chapman and husband Michael of Wilson; Loretta Herrold and husband William of Emerald Isle; Kathleen Wylie and husband Peter of Indian Beach and Margaret Harvey and husband Charles of Greenville, NC; her son, Robert Shumate, Jr. and his wife Stephanie of Cary; twelve grandchildren, Peter J. Wylie Jr. and his fiancée Calee Fussell, Lauren Shumate Battistelli and her husband Lorenzo, Cassidy E. Herrold and boyfriend James Lucas, David R. Wylie and his wife Jamie, Charles “Addison” Harvey Jr. and his wife Lauren, Margaret "Maggie" C. Shumate and boyfriend Jess Cox, Dylan G. Herrold, Robert “Warren” Harvey and his wife Christina, Elizabeth “Lizzy” Chapman, Emily R. Shumate, Michael “Mac” Chapman, Jr. and Robert W. “Will” Shumate; and one great grandchild, Logan A. Harvey.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Robert A. Shumate; her parents, Martin I. and Elizabeth (Bessie) Kelly Cook; and her brother, Martin I. Cook Jr.; and two sisters, Mildred Aline Cook and Agnes Theresa Arnett.
