Elbert Lee Davis,Sr., 88, of Harkers Island, died peacefully surrounded by his family and caregiver, Glenda Vick, at his home Monday, June 24, 2013.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Thursday at Harkers Island United Methodist Church with Rev. Brad Williams, Rev. David Harrington, and Rev. Keith Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery on Harkers Island.

Elbert was born on Harkers Island December 6, 1924 to Shellie and Mary Davis. He was a native Harkers Islander and always felt  there was no place like the Island. He served his country during WWII and spent 3 years in the US Coast Guard. Elbert was a people person and enjoyed the time he spent with Pilot Life Insurance Company and also as a car salesman with local car dealers. He worked as the Carteret County Tax Supervisor and was Veterans Service Officer when he retired in 1989. His life revolved around his church and he held numerous offices through the years at Harkers Island United Methodist Church. He enjoyed working in local politics and was a life long Republican.  After retirement, he volunteered at Taylor Extended Care, and at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum on Harkers Island, NC. He also enjoyed traveling and meeting people and making many friends.

He is survived by his wife Edna W. Davis of 66 years; two children Marsha Parker and husband Charles Parker, and Elbert Lee Davis, Jr., and wife Paula G. Davis; three grandchildren Christopher Willis and wife Lisa Willis, Jacob Davis and wife Liz Davis, Chelsea D. Guthrie and husband Joey Guhtrie; five great grandchildren Shelby Willis, Tyler Willis, Wesley Guthrie, Jaxon Guthrie, and Ellie Davis.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters LaGolda Miller, Sadie Willis, Alice Tillett, Rosabelle Hamilton, and a brother Tennie Davis.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 pm Wednesday at Harkers Island United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to First Friday Fellowship c/o Harkers Island United Methodist PO Box 307 Harkers Island, NC 28531 or to Hospice of Carteret County, PO Drawer 1619 Morehead City, NC 28557.
