Edward Baxter Brittingham, much beloved son, father, brother and friend passed away March 26, 2015 at his home in Morehead City. He loved Carteret County and could trace his ancestry back to many relatives in Atlantic and Eastern, NC.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm Tuesday at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Baxter lived in Raleigh until his family moved to Morehead City in 1958. He graduated from West Carteret High School in 1965 and he attended Edwards Military Institute and NC State College. He remained an ardent NC STATE fan throughout his life.

He served his country in the the US Coast Guard, after which he managed the storied Barnacle on the Atlantic Beach causeway. He was later employed as cub sports reporter for the Kinston Free Press, where he could apply his encyclopedic-like knowledge of all things sports related.

Baxter was a multi-talented businessman and entrepreneur. He was a licensed real estate and insurance agent. He particularly enjoyed participation in the development, management and revitalization of resort properties.

With partners he bought and ran Camp Morehead, owned and operated a resort and pier at Rodanthe, and developed land in Duck on the NC Outer Banks. Additionally, he expanded his business interests to Stuart, FL where he and a partner invested in a landscaping venture. In the 1990's, he and a business associate bought and ran Smugglers Cove Marina in Islamorada, FL where he lived for several years before returning to Morehead City.

He loved his family and friends deeply and maintained close relationships with them throughout his lifetime. His kind and gentle spirit was a steady beacon throughout his tenure with us.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Marjorie Donerson Kelley; daughter, Mary Brittingham Hirsekorn and husband Andrew; grandchild, Whitney Hirsekorn; sister, Patricia O'Neal Kelley; and aunt, Daphne Donerson Cleve.

The family will receive friends 1:30 - 2:30 prior to service at Munden Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to NC State Wolfpack Club, or a charity of your choice.
