Edward Alden Oliphant, age 93, a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and uncle, passed away on December 28, 2011.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on February 2, 1918, to the late Percival and Signe (Youngberg) Oliphant, “Ed” was retired from the former Morganite, Inc., of Long Island City, NY and Dunn, NC, where he served with dedication for over fifty years in various roles including machinist, for which he studied at Pratt Institute, chief union steward, and for several decades as plant engineer.
Known for his oft-spoken phrase, “what can I do for you?” Ed enjoyed his family and friends and cherished sixty-four years of marriage to his late wife, Grace Pieper Oliphant. He was proud he was born on Groundhog Day and liked being asked to inform all who asked how many more weeks of winter could be expected.
His fond childhood experiences included a ride in a blimp at age 10 or 12, in the area where La Guardia Airport in New York City now stands, and camping as a Boy Scout at Ten Mile River Camp Mann in New York State.
In Dunn, where he moved in 1966, Ed was president and past president of the Dunn Lions and relished his jocular role as Tail Twister. He was proud of the thousands of eye glasses he helped the Lions collect for sharing with others. He was treasurer of the Men’s Club of the Divine Street Methodist Church and often served as an usher, just as he had earlier at the United Methodist Church in Hollis, NY.
Ed is survived by his son, Richard (Jenni) of Swansboro, NC; daughter Linda (Richard) Stanford of East Lansing, MI, and grandson, Tristan (Lana) Stanford of Ellettsville, IN.
A private family funeral service will be held.
