Edward Thomas Brawley, Sr., 81, of Morehead City passed away peacefully at home on November 22, 2017.  He was born September 4, 1936 in the Old Watts Hospital in Durham NC.  The sky no doubt was Carolina blue.

Memorial services to be scheduled at a later date.

Father Leonard Lovasik, a guru of kindness, defines a gentleman as one who "has his eyes on all those present; he is tender toward the bashful, gentle toward the distant, and merciful toward the absent.” Edward Thomas Brawley was a gentleman.

After graduating from Durham High school, Ed attended UNC where he ran track and also became an accomplished, but humble, golfer.  He served as an officer in the Marine Corps from 1960-63 and later attended the University South Carolina Law School.

Ed practiced law in Durham for 40 years.  He never got rich but left a treasure of integrity and more than a few happy clients. Ever the gentleman, he preferred a handshake to a lawsuit.  To him, the legal system was a tool to find common ground, not a weapon with which to punish.

He was an active member of The Elks, The Shriners, and most recently The Fort Macon Power Squadron, and its informal offshoot, “The Fish House.”

This was a good year for Ed Brawley.  He witnessed the birth of his first grandchild, Sam.  His beloved Tarheels won the NCAA Championship.  A string of hurricanes left Morehead City unscathed. His son Eddie started his second year of law school, a fourth generation of Brawley attorneys.

Ed leaves behind his wife, Kitty; son, Edward Jr.; daughter, Margaret "Maggy" Bell and her husband, Michael; grandson, Sam; and sister Betsy Brawley Reade.

He was predeceased in death by his father, Sumpter; mother, Dorothy; and brother, Sumpter Jr.

The family wishes to thank the Raab Cancer Clinic, Crystal Coast Dialysis Center and the Carteret County Hospice for their unfailing care.

Donations in Ed's memory may be made to the Shriners Hospital care of the Sudan Shriners, 403 E. Front St., New Bern NC 28560.

A celebration of Ed's life was held last year on his 80th birthday and he enjoyed every minute of it, amidst family, friends, stories, BBQ and beer.   The sky was Carolina blue.

Online condolences may be made at www.mundenfuneralhome.net Arrangements are by Munden Funeral Home and Crematory, Morehead City, NC.
