Edith "Deta" Aldrich Ridgeway, 91, of Harkers Island, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Crystal Coast Hospice House.

Edith Aldrich Murphy Ridgeway, “Deta”, was born in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal in 1923. Her family later lived in Sao Palo, Brazil and during her formative years the family divided their time between Cape Cod, MA and Columbia, SC. Deta attended Wheelock College in Boston and the University of South Carolina. Avid sailors and adventurers, Deta and her late husband “Ridge” ran a sailing charter service in the Virgin Islands for many years before retiring to Harker’s Island where they were active in Morehead Beaufort Yachting Club. She was a great animal lover and had a passion for preservation of wildlife on the Outer Banks.
Deta was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Murphy Miller and Sherrie Murphy Stone, her husband Erwin T. Ridgeway, Jr. and son, James Randolph Ridgeway. She is survived by her daughters Edith Sanborn Ridgeway, Marion Ridgeway Redmond and son-in-law, Charles Cass Redmond; grandchildren Marion Adita Lumsden, Margaret Ridgeway Lumsden and Diana Sanborn Rever and grand son-in-law, Matthew John Rever; and four great grandchildren. No one loved life more than Deta. She loved to entertain and was always surrounded by many friends both young and old.
