Edfred M. Gaskill, Sr., 77, of Morehead City, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017 at his home.

His funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peters United Methodist Church, officiated by Reverend Karl Zorowski. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Edfred is a Carteret County native born at Morehead City Hospital on August 19th, 1940. Several times throughout Edfred’s childhood and adult life, his life was threatened by illness or injury. Despite these many challenges, he managed to pull through in each case through faith, and with the aid of a caring family and community.

In turn, Edfred devoted his life to family and to service of the community through the church and in his law enforcement career. Edfred began his career on the Morehead City Police force in 1959 and served in many capacities including; Chief of Police, Havelock Police Dept., Havelock, NC, Chief of Police Grenada Police Dept., Grenada, MS, Evidence and Property Manager, Pine Bluff Police Dept., Pine Bluff, AR, and Deputy Sherriff Captain, Washington County Sherriff’s Office, Fayetteville, AR.

Upon retiring from Law Enforcement and returning to Morehead City in 1996, Edfred continued his service as a security officer for Carteret General Hospital and through the church at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church. Once home in Carteret County, he quickly rekindled old friendships, where possible, and established new friendships and bonds throughout the community. It is noted by many that Edfred could always be counted on for any project, no matter how big or how small and no matter the time required to complete it.

However, Edfred always counted his family as his greatest love and achievement. He worked tirelessly throughout his life to ensure that everyone was safe and cared for. He would spare no expense and travel any distance to ensure that anything he could do to help would be done. His final statement was to express his love to his surviving wife, Ida P. Gaskill.

He is survived by his wife, Ida Gaskill of the home; daughters, Renee Gaskill Gouillon of Newport, Melanie Fisher and husband, Mark of Hays, KS; sons, Edfred M. Gaskill, Jr. of Greensboro, NC, James “Jimmy” L. Gaskill and wife, Dawn of Gainesville, VA, C. Timothy Venters and wife, Ladonna of Vero Beach, FL; mother, Edna M. Gaskill of Stacy; sisters, Sue Harris and husband, Paul of Atlantic, NC, Annette Small of Beaufort, NC; grandchildren, B.J. Gouillon and Aimee Gouillon, both of Fayetteville, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews.
