Dr. Rodman Lyon Lancaster of Atlantic Beach and Morehead City passed away on Friday, May 11, 2012 after a brief illness. Dr. Lancaster was born Feb. 22, 1923. He was the son of the late Grover Cleveland Lancaster, Sr. and the late Jessie Ipock Lancaster of Vanceboro, NC.
Dr. Lancaster graduated from Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. While there, he was co-capt of the basketball team for the legendary coach Ralph (Shug) Jordan. He was a well loved veterinarian in Morehead City for more than 35 years. He also served as Mayor of Atlantic Beach from 1990-1995. He had a love for golf, with 9 championships and an avid card player.
He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the Army Veterinary Medical Corp.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Allie Hyman Lancaster and a grandson, Ryan Lancaster Betz.
He is survived by his sons, Stuart Shelton and wife, Norma of Arlington, Va., Scott Shelton and wife, Libba, and daughter Susan Shelton Betz all of Morehead City, NC., grandchildren Travis and Hayley Shelton of Arlington, VA., Sarah Shelton Lawrence and husband Denny, Mollie Shelton Mossor and husband Joey, Amanda Leigh Betz. As well as great grandchildren Grayson and Poole Lawrence and Liam Mossor all of Morehead City, NC. He is also survived by two brothers, Grover C. Lancaster, Jr. of Vanceboro, NC and S. Jerome Lancaster and wife, Nancy, of Fernandina Beach, Florida.
The family will hold a memorial service Friday, May 18 at 3 P.M. at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church, Salter Path, N.C. The family will receive friends at a celebration of life reception following the service at the Morehead City Country Club, Morehead City, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Dr. Kirk Budd Memorial Grant Fund, c/o PAWS of Carteret, P.O. Box 1757., Morehead City, NC 28557.
