Dr. Richard Winstead Borden

Dr. Richard W. Borden, 87, of Newport, passed away on Thursday Dec 20, 2012 at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern.He died peacefully, surrounded by children and close friends.

Dr. Borden was born on the 29th of October, 1925 in Goldsboro. He was the son of Paul Lambert Borden and Martha Gold Winstead Borden. After serving his country as a Navy Corpsman in WWII, he pursued his education in medical training at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University in the practice of Family Medicine. For over thirty years, he served as a physician first in his hometown of Goldsboro, then in Morehead City. Dr. Borden was a founding trustee of North Carolina Outward Bound School and continued to participate with the school as long as he was able.

“Doc” was an avid outdoorsman whose interests included a compassionate love and study of all things natural, and a lifetime involvement in Scouting. In 2004 he, along with 99 other veterans of WWII were invited to France by the French  Government to participate in the 60th anniversary of D-Day.
Only days before his death, he was awarded by the US Army the Bronze Star and Medical Combat Badge for his service in the Normandy invasion.

He is survived by: sons Paul C. Borden, Richard “Bo” Borden,Jr, daughters Sarah Elizabeth Borden, Martha Mayo, Mariah Ogunda and Carmen Borden; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather at Munden’s Funeral Home, Morehead City, Thursday December 27 from 5-7pm. A service of remembrance will follow for the sharing of stories, memories and readings in his honor.
