Dr. James DeCamp Piver died Saturday, April 7 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving wife Tootie and his children. Dr. Piver was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi and was the son of William Crawford Piver and Elizabeth Sparrow Piver.
Dr. Piver was educated at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the University of Pennsylvania where he received his medical degree in 1943. He was a Captain in the US Army and served with the 30th Infantry Regiment in Germany during WWII.
Dr. Piver was the first Board Certified surgeon in Onslow County where he served as a general, thoracic and orthopaedic surgeon and practiced gynecology and urology in Jacksonville for 46 years. He founded Onslow Surgical Clinic from which he retired. During his years in Jacksonville, Dr. Piver served as the President of the Onslow Medical Society and Chief of Staff of Onslow Memorial Hospital.
James was a long time member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Jacksonville where he was a member of the vestry. When he and Tootie retired to Emerald Isle, they became members of St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church. In 2006, James and Tootie moved to Beaufort.
Dr. Piver is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Tootie” Piver and 6 children: Ashley Piver and wife Lynn of Wilmington; Alexa Blair of San Antonio, Texas; Kelly Aman of Raleigh; Kevin Piver and wife Cynthia of Cary; John Aman and wife Jackie of Cary; Kristina Steinmetz and husband Von of Satellite Beach, Florida; grandchildren James Piver, Coral and Liz Aman, David and Elizabeth Steinmetz, Dylan Piver and great granddaughter Alexa Jade Piver.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, April 10 at 11am at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church in Salter Path. The family will greet friends immediately after the service in the Fellowship Hall. Memorial donations may be made to the music program at St. Francis by the Sea, PO Box 7, Salter Path, NC 28575.
