Douglas Holmes Talton, 91, of Newport, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, April 14, 2016 during his rehab stay at Harborview in Morehead City.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel, Morehead City.  Interment to follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Captain Doug was born on November 19, 1924 in Smithfield, NC and grew up during the depression era.  He was a decorated Navy WWII and Korean War Veteran, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  At seventeen, young Doug enlisted to serve his country in the US Navy and served with distinction from 1943 to 1962, actively participating in the D-Day Invasion at Omaha Beach and deployed to stations in England, Korea, Japan, China, Guam, Italy, and Bikini Atoll (Atomic Bomb Testing).  During his military career, he was employed as a cryptographer with NATO, and later worked as Captain of private yachts for many years.  He celebrated his 85th birthday as an employee of BB&T Bank in Tallahassee, FL, then returned to his home state in 2008, making Carteret County his home.  Those who knew him will forever remember his good stories, warmth, sense of humor, and his famous award winning tugboat chili recipe, with garbonzo beans!

He is survived by his devoted wife of 29 years, Marie; beloved daughters, Jenny, Robin and Ellen and their husbands; five grandchildren, Jeremy, Meredith, Caitlyn, Freddie and Jessie; five great-grandchildren, Zach, Logan, Caleb, Max and Gracie; brother, Bob Talton and wife Betty of Beaufort, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Swannanoa Talton; younger sister, Thelma; brothers,Tom, James, John and Glenn; and his first wife, Jean.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 Monday, April 18, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
