Douglas E. Guthrie Jr., 71, of Newport, North Carolina, died peacefully at the Crystal Coast Hospice House on Saturday, May 25, 2024, with his beloved wife, Loretta, by his side. Douglas is no longer in pain or suffering.
A memorial service, with military honors, will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 29th at All Saints Anglican Church in Newport, officiated by Rev. Dave Linka, Rev. King Cole and Rev. John Grayson. The family will receive friends following the service.
Born on June 23, 1952, in Morehead City, North Carolina, Douglas was the beloved son of the late Douglas Guthrie Sr. and Billie Joyce Watson Guthrie. He proudly served his country in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War and received numerous medals for his dedication in service. In his professional life, Douglas successfully owned a painting business and undertook numerous commercial and residential contracts within the local community.
Left to honor and cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 36 years, Loretta Hall Guthrie of the home; son, Steve Guthrie (Cathy) and their children, Cailyn Suggs (DJ) and Cooper Guthrie, along with Cailyn's son, Eli Suggs, all of Morehead City; son, Joseph Rose (Danielle) and their children, Luke, and Clare Johnston, all of Morehead City; and son, Thomas Rose (Carrie) and their son, Liam Rose, all of Wilmington.
In addition to his parents, Douglas was preceded in death by his sister, Debbie Shray, brother, Watson Guthrie; son, Douglas "Dougie" Guthrie III; and daughter, April Guthrie Herring.
