Dot Willis

Dot Salter Willis, 89, of Morehead City, went to be with her Heavenly Father Wednesday, September 15, 2010.

Services will be held 3:00 pm Saturday at Munden Funeral Home with Rev. Porter Graves, and Rev. Curt Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at Nelson Bay Cemetery.

She was born January 13, 1921 on Portsmouth Island, and until her death, was the last living person born there. She dearly loved her island home and attending the one room school-house on the island. She and her father, Ben Salter, co-authored the book Portsmouth Island Short Stories and History.

She lived in Atlantic and Sea Level, and was a charter member of the Sea Level Missionary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. In her early years she witnessed to many in prisons and jails. She was a member of the Bridgeway Church of the Nazarene in Beaufort and a past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star #128 Beaufort, NC. She was a member of the Morehead City Historical Society and Friends of Portsmouth Island.

She will always be in the loving memory of her family. She is survived by two daughters, Thelma ?Jane? Nelson and husband Allen of Morehead City, NC, Mary Jo Quinn and husband David of Newport, NC; step-son, Randy Willis and wife Paula of Sea Level; two sisters, Mary Mason of Morehead City, and Margaret Jones of Newport; a brother, William B. Salter and wife Carol of Jamestown; grandchildren, David Quinn, Jr. of Newport, Stephen Nelson of Wilmington, DE, Christi Daniel of Waldorf, MD, Dale Nelson of Newport, Johnathan Nelson of Morehead City, Tonya N. Snyder of Hedgesville, WV, and Cassandra Willis; step-grandson Asa Willis of Newport; nine great-grandchildren, Shephard Quinn, Charlie Quinn, Millicent Nelson, John Nelson, Niegel Daniel, Allison Bowman, Jesse Daniel, Chase Nelson, Chelsea Nelson, Jermey, Tyler, and Wesley Nelson, and Colton Nelson, three great-great grandchildren, Triston, Isabella, and Joseph, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, her loving care-giver Elizabeth Miller, and great friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, Keith Moon, two grandsons, Allen Francis Nelson, III, and Joseph Mark Nelson, and two sisters, Geraldine Edwards, and Ethel Marie Brannon.

The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 pm Friday at Munden Funerl Home.
