Dorothy "Dot" Etlene (Garner) West

Dorothy “Dot” West, 93, received her “mansion on a hilltop” Wednesday morning, February 5, 2014.
A service will be held at 2pm Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Munden Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Linebarger and Rev. Ronnie Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport.
The youngest of six children, she was born in Newport in 1921 to Irvin and Maude Garner. While attending East Carolina Teacher’s College, she married Dorval Wayne West, Jr. and settled back in Newport to rear their family. She briefly taught at Newport Consolidated School and then held diverse jobs in the community while helping tend the family farm. Dot spent many years working at the Newport Red & White.
Her legacy includes 4 children: Evelyn Eidell and her husband, Ike, of Athens, GA; Dottie Simmons of Newport; Judy Linebarger and her husband, Jerry, of Newport; and Wayne West III and his wife, Marianne, of Henrico, NC. Although she loved being called Mother, her favorite name was ‘Baa’, which was given to her by her grandchildren: Lori, Jarrett, Carla, Ivey, Jamie, and Ashley. Her family was completed with the addition of her nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6-8pm tonight (Feb. 7) at Munden Funeral Home.
Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to Carteret Community College Scholarship Fund or Newport Consolidated School Alumni Association in her honor.
