Dorothy Dolores “Dee Dee” McNiel, 93, of Morehead City, went to be with the Lord Monday, March 6, 2017.

Her service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Parkview Baptist Church in Morehead City with Mark McNiel officiating.

Dee Dee was born on June 16, 1923, in Houston, Texas. She was the daughter of the late Rev. George H. Lee and Dolores Johnson Lee. She graduated from Baylor University in 1944 with a bachelor’s degree in education. After a brief courtship, she married Capt. Monroe Elton “Mac” McNiel in January 1946. He preceded her in death in August 1997. Mac and Dee Dee lived in several Southern towns following his career in the U.S. Marine Corps, and they settled down in Morehead City in 1957.

Dee Dee sold encyclopedias door-to-door, taught and was a school librarian in Newport, was a real estate agent and famously established and ran the first successful Christian bookstore in Morehead City. She was a youth activities director, choir member, Bible scholar and popular Sunday school teacher. Her pastimes were gardening and scripture memorization. She was a member of the Gideons Auxiliary and a fervent supporter of Christian missions.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Hamlin and husband Newton; sons, David McNiel and wife Lori, Stephen McNiel and wife Linda and Mark McNiel and wife Tatiana; grandchildren, Miriam Juzyk and Nate Hamin, Judah and Paul McNiel, Maria Goff and Evangeline Rodriguez, Jon, Christian and Evan McNiel and Heather and Jonathan McNiel; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Her family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
